Summary Punjab has imposed Section 144 until October 15, banning gatherings of five or more people, rallies and sit-ins amid security concerns over possible terrorist attacks on public gatherings.

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 across the province from today (Tuesday) until October 15, restricting public gatherings and several other activities in open and public spaces.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, gatherings of five or more people, processions, rallies, public meetings and sit-ins have been prohibited at public places, roads and open areas.

The order also bans carrying or displaying weapons at public places, as well as encouraging or provoking people to participate in unlawful gatherings.

The restrictions will not apply to weddings, funeral prayers, burials, mosques and other places of worship. Courts, government offices and officially authorised events have also been exempted.

Law enforcement agencies, intelligence agencies and security personnel performing official duties will remain outside the scope of the restrictions.

The Home Department said intelligence and law enforcement agencies had reported information about immediate security threats, including concerns that terrorist organisations could target public gatherings.

According to the department, large gatherings could become potential targets for terrorist attacks. The restrictions have therefore been imposed as a precautionary measure to protect the lives and property of citizens.
