ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Federal Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb said on Friday that immediate actions are needed to address the issue of climate change.

Addressing a gathering on the International Glacier Day here, he said that in 2022, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution related to glaciers, which identified climate change and population as the two most critical issues for Pakistan and emphasized the need to make glacier protection a central part of national policy.

To tackle environmental changes, Pakistan needed the cooperation of partners and the United Nations, Aurangzeb said.

Pakistan has more than 3,000 glacial lakes, of which 33 are extremely dangerous, and more than seven million people are at risk due to their potential bursting, he added.

The finance minister stated that the increasing frequency of climatic disasters, including floods, is alarming. “Pakistan is presenting the Glacier Protection and Resilience Strategy for public review, and there is an urgent need for a comprehensive strategy to address climate risks,” the minister noted.

Aurangzeb said that the devastating floods of 2022 and the increasing pollution in Pakistan have caused significant damage. Immediate actions are needed to address climate change. A national-level framework for climate strategy exists, but its implementation remains a major challenge, he concluded.
