Summary Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised Pakistan’s armed forces and announced annual May 10 commemorations during the first anniversary ceremony of Marka-e-Haq in Islamabad.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday commemorated the first anniversary of “Marka-e-Haq” by praising Pakistan’s armed forces for what he described as a “historic response” to India during last year’s conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Addressing a ceremony held at the Pakistan Monument in Islamabad, the premier recalled the events that unfolded following the April 22 Pahalgam attack and the subsequent military confrontation that ended with a ceasefire on May 10 after Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.

The event was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf, and Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Baber Sidhu, alongside senior political leaders, diplomats and military officials.

PM Shehbaz began his address with a minute of silence in honour of those martyred during the conflict period.

Recalling the tensions with India, the prime minister said New Delhi had levelled baseless accusations against Pakistan following the Pahalgam attack despite Islamabad offering support for a transparent investigation into the incident.

He maintained that India later launched attacks on Pakistani territory during the night, targeting mosques and civilians, which he termed an “unprovoked war”.

“Our brave armed forces gave a historic response to the attack that the enemy carried out in the darkness of the night,” PM Shehbaz said. “Our Shaheens dominated the conflict.”

The premier revealed that India sought a ceasefire within four hours following Pakistan’s military response. He further asserted that even a year after the Pahalgam attack, India had failed to provide evidence supporting allegations of Pakistan’s involvement.

“There is no doubt that Operation Bunyan-un-Marsoos is not just a historic win but also a glowing victory of our national honour, principles and self-respect,” he said.

PM Shehbaz announced that May 10 would now be commemorated annually as “Youm-e-Bunyan-un-Marsoos”.

The prime minister paid tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces, singling out Field Marshal Asim Munir for what he called exemplary leadership during Marka-e-Haq.

“Field Marshal’s wise and brave leadership will be written in golden words in history. Field Marshal Asim Munir, the entire nation and I salute you,” he said.

He also praised Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Baber Sidhu and the Pakistan Air Force, stating that the country’s “Shaheens” had exposed the reality behind the adversary’s claims of aerial superiority.

The premier additionally commended the Pakistan Navy and its operational preparedness, saying the adversary “could not muster the courage to enter our waters” during the conflict.

PM Shehbaz acknowledged the support shown by the Pakistani public and thanked friendly countries for backing Islamabad diplomatically during the tensions.

He specifically expressed gratitude to US President Donald Trump, saying the American leader played a “historic role for peace in the region and to save millions of lives”.

The premier warned that a further escalation between two nuclear powers could have produced devastating consequences for the region.

He also thanked the leadership of Saudi Arabia, China and Turkiye for supporting Pakistan during the crisis.

Referring to regional diplomacy, PM Shehbaz revealed that Pakistan’s mediation efforts between the United States and Iran were continuing. He noted that Pakistan had recently received Iran’s response regarding ongoing diplomatic engagements, though he declined to provide details.

He praised Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Field Marshal Asim Munir for their efforts on the diplomatic front, before concluding his speech with a commitment to provide greater educational, employment and skills-development opportunities for the country’s youth.
