BAGHDAD (Dunya News) - Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iran during talks with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, in Baghdad.
Hussein stressed that Iraq does not support an expansion of the conflict to Gulf states and opposes attacks on Iran, urging efforts to prevent further regional escalation.
Speaking at a joint press conference, Araghchi thanked the Iraqi government and people for their support during the recent war, saying Iraq had stood by Iran in the face of Israeli and US aggression.
The Iranian foreign minister also said the Strait of Hormuz would remain under Iran's control and management for the next 30 days. He stated that Tehran was working to remove remaining obstacles before restoring the waterway to full operational capacity.
Araghchi warned that any unilateral intervention by other parties could worsen tensions and delay the reopening of the strategically important shipping route.
Commenting on the Iran-US memorandum of understanding, Araghchi urged Washington to ensure that all of its provisions are implemented, including those related to Lebanon.
He accused Israel of continuing air strikes on Lebanon despite the agreement and called on the United States to pressure Israel to halt its military operations and withdraw from areas it continues to occupy in southern Lebanon.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most vital maritime trade routes, carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Recent tensions in the region have heightened concerns over the security of international shipping and energy supplies.
