Petitioner sets himself ablaze inside LHC premises

LAHORE (Muhammad Ashfaq) - A petitioner on Tuesday set himself on fire in the precincts of Lahore High Court (LHC).
According to the report, the case of petitioner Asif Javed, who belonged to Khanewal, was due in in the court of LHC Judge Justice Shujaat Ali Khan.
Fortunately, Javed was immediately rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital.
Sources said the police officer who foiled the attempt of self-immolation said that the petitioner brought petrol in a water bottle and as soon as he left the court corridor, he suddenly set himself on fire. The police officer present at the spot extinguished the fire and shifted the self-immolator Asif Javed to the hospital.
Zunira Bibi, petitioner’s wife, told Dunya News that they have six children. She said due to this case, the house and car have been sold, they are living on loans.
LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelum took a strict notice of the incident resulting which the police high-ups visited the premises and initiated an inquiry.
IG Punjab transferred SP Security High Court Khurram Shahzad and suspended DSP Security Khalid Malik.
Case Background
Asif Javed, a resident of Khanewal, was dismissed by a private company in 2016. In 2019, the Labour Court reinstated him to his previous job. The court battle continued as the private company challenged the decision of the Labour Court in the National Industrial Relations Commission.
On November 23, 2020, the commission dismissed the private company’s appeal. Following whichtThe private company challenged the decision in the LHC in December 2020, which is still pending in the court of Justice Shujaat Ali Khan.
Now, Javed has presented a new lawyer in this case, on which the court adjourned the hearing till April 8.
