LAHORE (Dunya News) – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Friday inaugurated Pakistan’s first complete electric bus service.

She was briefed about the service Minister for Transport Bilal Akbar while riding a bus. The bus can run 250 kilometres on a single charge. Nine charging stations have been established to recharge batteries. It will have a seating capacity of 30 and can accommodate 80 passengers.

There will be have separate sections for women in the electric bus. Cameras have been installed to prevent incidents of harassment.

Initially, 27 electric buses will be operated on 21-kilometer route from Railway Station to Green Town via Queen's Road, Mozang, Ferozepur Road, Campus Bridge and canal. The bus will leave after every nine minutes.

Minister Akbar said 17,000 passengers will be able to travel daily on Lahore's first electric bus service. The bus service will be officially launched in mid-February.

The fare can be paid through digital wallets and digital cards. Later, universal transport cards will also be issued. Training for 70 drivers has started.

The chief minister directed to review the installation of solar fans and water coolers at bus stops.

Later, a meeting was held with the chief minister in the chair to review the e-taxi project in Lahore. She directed to review the assembling of e-taxis in Punjab.

She also directed to take steps to establish electric charging stations in partnership with the private sector.
